I am at that age where lots of friends are getting married so I get quite a lot of wedding invitations. Without exception, at every one of the wedding receptions I have been to over the last couple of years, someone who has had to make a toast or a speech has sat in misery throughout dinner waiting for their turn to be called to the mic.
I used to notice this all the time but didn’t really pay much notice – a bit like the feeling of relief you used to get at school when someone was in trouble but it wasn’t you!
Anyway this relaxed attitude changed when I was asked to be best man at my friend’s wedding earlier this year. Just like everyone else I had seen before, I sat miserable through the delicious wedding dinner with the growing realisation that any minute I would be up in front of 200 people expected to give a memorable speech. When the time came I totally butchered my speech – the jokes bombed and the timing was terrible. A forgettable experience all round.
So when I was asked to give another speech and toast at my cousin’s wedding, I was determined that there would be no repeat of the previous fiasco!
So after a bit of Googling I came up with Speeches 4U who had just what I was looking for. Armed with the advice in their book I was able to prepare a great speech and toast. I was prepared, confident and most of all I enjoyed the wedding dinner!
